Injury, Health & Wellness-Florida's Auto Injury Experts

If you have been injured in a vehicle, you're not alone. According to the National Safety Council (NSA), there are more than 12 million motor vehicle accidents annually including more than 20 million vehicles. This results in over 5 million nonfatal accidents annually, of which approximately 2 million are disabling injuries including approximately 1 million work-related auto disabling injuries. At INJURY TO HEALTH in Apopka, we have special emphasis in providing the unique level of professional care these injuries often require.

ABOUT US

Chiropractic

With an established, private practice since 1980, Dr. Mark Boylan has provided individualized care for musculoskeletal injuries and other conditions related to automobile accidents for many satisfied patients. Injuries can have long term, progressive damage to your health. They can disrupt your sleep, blur your vision, make you hurt from your head to your toes — or just be uncomfortable, not allowing you to be your better self; not just short term, but well into your future. Our approach is to evaluate as well as provide treatment, advice, or coordinate treatment as necessary with specialty physicians to achieve the best results.

Emphasis in Recovery from Auto Related Injuries.

A few seconds in an auto accident can turn into years of suffering. You deserve the best treatment for these injuries and Dr. Boylan's focus is to assist victims of auto accidents helping to restore them to normal activities with alleviation of symptoms. We are central Florida's auto injury experts who seek to treat the structural cause of injury and pain. We strive to improve patient health through a program that targets and treats the source of acute or chronic pain. INJURY TO HEALTH can often achieve these results through the use of carefully selected and individualized recovery programs utilizing one or several comfortable means of treatment. INJURY HEALTH & WELLNESS can advise you of your treatment options, including medical and non-medical solutions.

OUR APPROACH

Each injured person can have one or many different types of health problems. As injuries can affect how you feel and move about, we evaluate the structural and functional aspects and provide individual recommendations for your best healing and future health outcome. Without appropriate treatment, one may be subjected to periodic flare-ups, progressive worsening or chronic aches, pains and stiffness of degeneration (arthritis) and neurologic related symptoms.

Joint or bone traumas such as fractures or dislocations require a visit to emergency rooms, trauma units and/or orthopaedic surgeons to tend to those needs. Other injuries that are not as traumatic but are likewise short or long term disrupting are the spinal or other bodily joint misalignments, however mild or sometimes overlooked. Emergency facility physicians or other medical specialists may advise you of no broken bones and that the x-rays look normal, but do not specialize in the treatment of the otherwise overlooked "subtle" or "not so subtle" injuries and may or may not recommend medication for these muscular, joint, nerve and or disk damaging injuries. Though medications can provide relief, additional structural and functional assessment should be a consideration.

"We are proud of the exceptional results our procedures had brought to our patients including those with degenerative arthritis, disc bulges and herniations. Our conservative approach methods have helped prevent spine surgery and can also benefit those with prior healed vertebra fractures, hip replacements or prior spine surgeries including fusions."

Neck, back , shoulders, knees and TMJ (temporomandibular "jaw") and / or other joints and associated soft tissue discs, (muscles, ligaments, tendons) can be disrupted enough that greatly need the knowledge, experience and skill to provide medically researched care as provided at this office.

If after a recent or not-so-recent accident and concerned about ongoing symptoms of aches, pains or dysfunction of bodily wellbeing, whether already have been under the care of one or more health care providers, you need another opinion from a physician with training and experienced emphasis on these conditions related to trauma - we're here to help you!

Our approach is to evaluate as well as provide treatment, advice or coordinate treatment as necessary with a patient's physician and may include specialty physicians to achieve the best results.

Auto Accident

CONDITIONS WE TREAT

Auto-related injuries, Arm pain (Strain and / or Nerve Related), Arthritis, Bursitis, Carpal tunnel syndrome, Cervical spine disorders, Chronic pain, Degenerative disc disease, Dizziness, Facet Syndrome, Failed back surgery syndrome, Headache / migraine, Herniated disc / bulging disc, Hip pain, Joint pain, Knee pain, Kyphosis,  Leg pain, Lower back pain, Meniscal tears, Migraine headaches, Muscle pain / muscle strain, Nerve Symptoms, Nerve Compressions, Numbness, Neck pain,  Osteoarthritis, Osteoporosis, Osteoporotic compression fracture, Rotator cuff injury, Sacroiliac joint dysfunction, Sciatica / radiculopathy, Scoliosis and deformity, Shoulder pain, Spinal stenosis, Spondylolisthesis, Sports injuries, Tendonitis, Tingling of arms, legs, hands, or toes, TMJ, Upper back pain, Vertebral subluxation and Whiplash

TREATMENT TIME FRAMES

In-office treatment time may last 5-15 minutes which includes doctor assessment each visit for appropriate care determination and treatment or could last 10-30 minutes depending upon each individual's treatment needs according to their condition. We realize people need to tend to their work and home demands and that is taken into consideration with the patient, but skilled treatment should not be rushed.

Duration of treatment for recovery also depends upon the degree of injury and each individual’s response to care. Some patients respond to ease of symptoms in less than two weeks though others may require a longer recovery time to allow “transition time” of improving structural and functional healing to within normal limits and with stability. However, some traumas or conditions may leave an individual with such a residual weakness that periodic supportive or “preventing a worsening” treatment may be recommended.

If medication is all that is necessary to achieve easing symptoms, that recommendation will be advised or at least provided as an option. However, structural and functional compromise will require our appropriate attention to avoid living with less than optimal bodily functioning leading to joint wear and tear arthritis and potential nerve damage related conditions.

TYPES OF TREATMENT

Various types of treatment may be provided to most quickly and comfortably ease symptoms and return one to pre-injury status. Any of the following treatments may be provided at this office:

Massage, ultrasound, laser, spinal adjustment (hand and or instrument provided), traction/decompression, deep tissue massage, gentle manipulation of the shoulder, TMJ (temporomandibular “jaw”), wrist and/or knee, heat therapy, EMS (electrical muscle stimulation), interferential, physiotherapeutic myofascial trigger point, flexion-distraction spine treatment, spinal and muscular rehabilitation, stretching and myofascial release.

"Substantial medical research validates the efficacy of spinal manipulative treatment for spinal injuries related to auto accidents and various other spine, disc, and nerve related injury conditions."

Spinal Adjustment

Sometimes referred to as manipulation, at our office, adjustment means a gentle, more specific repositioning of a slight bone or joint misalignment, such as a vertebra of the spine, a shoulder, wrist or knee. A determination is made through specific analysis of x-ray and our gentle hands-on spinal or joint movement/ assessment and positioning analysis. One or more vertebrae that are misaligned (also known as a subluxation) from trauma or other stresses can have abnormal movement causing it to inflame the joints of the vertebrae it would normally align with. It could also be misaligned to the degree that it could cause nerve or disk irritation and pain or other nerve associated conditions.

The objective of the chiropractic adjustment is to reduce or eliminate misalignment to decrease or eliminate pain, muscle spasm and nerve irritation, if present, to decrease symptoms and to improve function and health. When pain, spasms or patient apprehension does not allow comfortable treatment, relaxing, pain easing therapeutics or medication will be recommended. We want your experiences to be a good one.

There are two types of spinal adjustments utilized at this office. One provided by the Doctor’s skilled, experienced hands and the other provided by the doctor provided instrument as explained in the next section. The adjustment made by Dr. Boylan consists of a hand applied quick and light to moderate pressure/thrust motion to a misaligned vertebra. Most of the time it is accompanied by an audible release of a small amount of gas (oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide) that sounds like a “popping” or “cracking” sound. This is a mostly painless procedure (though short duration, seconds of minor discomfort may occur). By far, in comparison, 99.9% of patients surveyed at this office stated they would much rather have the adjustment than a pain relieving shot (injection). Therapy application may be provided to ease associated muscle, tendon or ligament pain or inflamation to assist in the body’s improvement rate. In times of acute pain, a therapy application to reduce pain and spasm allowing for an easier adjustment may also be provided. We want your treatment experience to be a pleasant one.

Instrument Adjustment

There are times when either due to pain, advanced osteoporosis or a patient just doesn’t like the “popping” or “cracking” noise associated with the hands-on approach to treatment, an instrument called Impulse® may be utilized. Highly researched for superior effectiveness of improving outcome results, this treatment is a hand held device that, as provided by the doctor, produces a light to moderate force of rapid tapping applied to a misaligned vertebra. It may also be applied to various degrees of rigid muscle to provide a comfortable relaxing treatment. Neuromechanical.com

Our various procedures are gentle, safe, effective treatment for ligament damage conditions as well as disc problems including: herniations, bulges and severe degeneration of the joints.

Cox® Treatment

Cox® flexion distraction decompression treatment is a chiropractic adjusting procedure. It is a specific level application of long y axis and flexion distraction vector mild force to treat the following spinal conditions: disc herniation, spinal stenosis, disc degeneration, spondylolisthesis, facet syndrome subluxation, transitional segment, scoliosis, and nerve compression. Frequently Asked Questions about Chiropractic

The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) receives many questions about chiropractic. Below are their answers to the most commonly asked questions.

 What conditions do chiropractors treat?

Does chiropractic treatment require a referral from an MD?

 Is chiropractic treatment safe?

Is chiropractic treatment appropriate for children?

Are chiropractors allowed to practice in hospitals or use medical outpatient facilities?

 Do insurance plans cover chiropractic?

What type of education and training do chiropractors have?

How is a chiropractic adjustment performed?

 Is chiropractic treatment ongoing?

Why is there a popping sound when a joint is adjusted?

Q: What conditions do chiropractors treat?
A: Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health. Chiropractic care is used most often to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, and headaches.

Q: Does chiropractic treatment require a referral from an MD?
A: No, a patient does not need referral by an MD before visiting a doctor of chiropractic. Chiropractors are first contact physicians, and are so defined in federal and state regulations. Following a consultation and examination, the doctor of chiropractic will arrive at a diagnosis under chiropractic care, or refer the patient to the appropriate health care provider. Dr. Boylan has received many referrals from medical physicians over the years.

Q: Is chiropractic treatment safe?
A: Yes, chiropractic treatment is safe and effective. While any form of health treatment contains a degree of inherent risk, there is little danger in chiropractic care when administered by a licensed practitioner. To assure competency, all states require that DCs be board-qualified, licensed, and regulated according to stringent criteria. Statistics show that patient risk is substantially lower in chiropractic as opposed to medical care, where the use of prescription drugs and surgery pose a greater risk.

Q: Is chiropractic treatment appropriate for children?
A: Yes, children can benefit from chiropractic care. Children are very physically active and experience many types of falls and blows from activities of daily living as well as from participating in sports. Injuries such as these may cause many symptoms including back and neck pain, stiffness, soreness or discomfort. Chiropractic care is always adapted to the individual patient. It is a highly skilled treatment, and in the case of children, very gentle.

Q: Are chiropractors allowed to practice in hospitals or use medical outpatient facilities?
A: Chiropractors are being recognized to admit and treat patients in hospitals and to use outpatient clinical facilities (such as labs, x-rays, etc.) for their non-hospitalized patients. Hospital privileges were first granted in 1983. But, Chiropractic care is mostly outpatient facility provided.

Q: Do insurance plans cover chiropractic?
A: The majority of all insured American workers have coverage for chiropractic services in their health care plans. For example, the federal government’s Office of Personnel Management offers chiropractic coverage for federal employees in both the Mail Handlers and BCBS benefit plans. In addition, there is a chiropractic benefit in Federal Workers’ Compensation, and chiropractic care is available to members of the armed forces at more than 40 military bases, and is available at nearly 30 veterans’ medical facilities.

Q: What type of education and training do chiropractors have?
A: Chiropractors are educated as primary contact health care practitioners, with an emphasis on musculoskeletal diagnosis and treatment. Educational requirements for doctors of chiropractic are among the most stringent of any of the health care professions. The typical applicant at a chiropractic college has already acquired nearly four years of pre-medical undergraduate college education, including courses in biology, inorganic and organic chemistry, physics, psychology and related lab work. Once accepted into an accredited chiropractic college, the requirements become even more demanding — four to five academic years of professional study are the standard. Because of the hands-on nature of chiropractic, and the intricate adjusting techniques, a significant portion of time is spent in clinical training. In total, the chiropractic curriculum includes a minimum of 4,200 hours of classroom, laboratory and clinical experience. The course of study is approved by an accrediting agency that is fully recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Q: How is a chiropractic adjustment performed?
A: Chiropractic adjustment or manipulation is a manual procedure that utilizes the highly refined skills developed during the intensive years of chiropractic education. The chiropractic physician typically uses his/her hands to manipulate the joints of the body, particularly the spine, in order to reduce pain, and restore or enhance joint function. Chiropractic manipulation is a highly controlled procedure that rarely causes discomfort. The chiropractor adapts the procedure to meet the specific needs of each patient. Patients often note positive changes in their symptoms immediately following treatment.

Q: Is chiropractic treatment ongoing?
A: The hands-on nature of the chiropractic treatment is essentially what requires patients to visit the specialist a number of times. To be treated by a chiropractic physician, a patient needs to be in his or her office. In contrast, a course of treatment from medical doctors often involves a pre-established plan that is conducted at home (i.e. taking a course of antibiotics once a day for a couple of weeks). A chiropractor may provide acute, chronic, and/or preventive care thus making a certain number of visits sometimes necessary. Your doctor of chiropractic should tell you the extent of treatment recommended and how long you can expect it to last

Q: Why is there a popping sound when a joint is adjusted?
A: Adjustment of a joint may result in release of a gas bubble between the joints that makes a popping sound – it’s exactly the same as when you “crack” your knuckles. The noise is caused by the change of pressure within the joint that results in gas bubbles being released. There is typically no pain involved.

Dr. Emmons is the best. I am feeling much better. I did physical therapy at Cora for a couple of months, pain medication and cortisone injection, they didn't work for me. The chiropractic medicine works better for me. I highly recommend them. You won't regret it.

Preventing Back Surgery

When I worked for the Orange County Sheriff Department I started having severe headaches in the temple area of my head. I went to the medical doctor and he sent me to a neurosurgeon, who said they would have to do surgery since none of the medication did any good. I didn’t want surgery and I know that my headaches were interfering with my job. I didn’t know where to turn. Then I ran into an old friend of mine who said she worked for Dr. Boylan. We started talking and she told me how he had helped her with her hearing and her headaches. So I said I would make an appointment and see him.

In no time at all I was back to my old self again. My headaches are gone and I feel great. In my job you can’t afford to be on medication. I also feel chiropractic is the best medication of all.

I woke up one morning with shooting pain down my right leg and was unable to move...
I visited our family doctor and was put on pain medication and steroids. After two weeks, the pain was the same so I was sent for an MRI. The MRI results showed a very large herniated disc. My doctor referred me to an orthopedic specialist. I made an appointment with the specialist and was told if I wanted the pain to go away, surgery was the only answer. I was not ready for back surgery at age 27 so I decided to continue steroid injections. At first I felt results, but the pain returned worse than before. After speaking with a co-worker, she referred me to Dr. Boylan. I began treatment with Dr. Boylan in April 2009 and at first, improvement was slow but after a couple of months I went from not being able to move to playing on the floor again with my daughter. Dr. Boylan sent for a follow-up MRI and believe it or not, the herniated disc was still there, but had gone down significantly. I was given my life back and am able to do just about anything. Thanks to Dr. Boylan and his staff, I am able to get around and live life again without having back pain and without having back surgery.

I had a back injury for two years. Motrin would relieve pain until the effect of the medication would wear off. Prior treatment included two back surgeries, back school and physical therapy with very little progress. I have made a lot of progress since I started having chiropractic treatments. I have not taken any more drugs for pain. I feel like a new man. Thank you Dr. Boylan for giving me a new start!

I had severe pain in my leg, knee and back for 3 months. I went to 5 different doctors and was taking all types of arthritis drugs with no help. I had cortisone shots and a knee replacement recommended. I started to see Dr. Boylan and the extreme pain was gone and I was able to walk without the limp and became able to drive my car again. I am so thankful I avoided surgery.

In 1991 I had an injury that fractured a vertebra in my back causing both of my legs to be paralyzed...
I underwent surgery with steel rods and screws fusing 5 vertebrae. I was able to return to walking though very altered and relying on crutches. In April 2009, a van ran a red light and struck the front of my car totaling it. Due to the back pain, which made me want to use a wheel chair, I went to Dr. Boylan for help. He was able to provide comfortable and effective treatments above and below my surgical fusions providing much needed relief enabling me to get around on my crutches. The staff made me feel comfortable and at home. Their professionalism is top notch.

In February 2005, I was 14 ft. up on a ladder when it gave way... I fell onto my back across the ladder and fractured my spine. I was under the care of an orthopaedic surgeon relying on medication over the next 3 years and was not able to return to work due to the pain and disability. The pain began to worsen affecting my sleep after discontinuing the pain medication. Despite my orthopaedist's advice not to have chiropractic care, and with him not having anything better to offer, I consulted with Dr. Boylan in 2009. After an examination and review of my medical records including x-rays, MRI's and C-T's he advised me of the possibilities of improvement with his treatment. A spine adjustment and therapy application was with minor discomfort and that night with so much relief I was able to sleep through the night for the first time in several years. I could not believe the amount of relief from one treatment and very disappointed after 3 years of suffering that the medical profession is not more appreciative of the benefits that competent chiropractic physicians such as Dr. Boylan can provide. I had five treatments over a two week time frame and have been doing very well now having returned to work 40 hours a week and able to ride a bike 40 miles at a time.

Neck Pain

I came to Dr. Boylan through the recommendations of a good friend and my husband who had received good results from chiropractic treatment. I had been to my M.D., an Orthopedist, an internal specialist and a thyroid specialist. Their diagnosis was a thyroid problem and arthritis for which I was given medication for each. After no results in two years from medication and the possible side effects, I discontinued taking them. After two to three months and getting worse, I called Dr. Boylan's office. He explained some things that could cause my problem and did a really thorough examination. He started treatment and made me feel terrific. Within two to three weeks all soreness was out of my neck and I was not choking on anything and still don't. I tell others how wonderful it is and how I wished I had seen Dr. Boylan long before this. I can now even enjoy my needlework where before I could not bend my neck to do so. I am thankful.

I am 92 years old and on March 22, 2011, I was involved in an automobile accident.... It totaled the car I was riding in. I had a neck, low back, right shoulder and left knee injury. I was living with a lot of pain, could barely move my shoulder and had to wear a knee support because it was giving out on me. After being at the hospital for evaluation and told I had no broken bones, I was told I should see Dr. Mark Boylan for treatment, that even at my age he could possibly help me despite my spine degeneration and bulged discs. With his adjustments and therapies to my neck, back, shoulder and knee pain, I am nearly completely pain free and not relying on pain medication. I have no shoulder pain and almost complete, full movement. My knee has no pain and I don't have to wear the knee support. My neck and back feel almost as good as before the accident. I am so thankful they can help injured people like me.

Headaches

I developed severe TMJ after I was hit in the face with an airbag in 1996...Before I went to Dr. Boylan, the TMJ was such a painful, scary experience. My jaw felt like it was completely unhinged at times and hurt so bad. There was also a lot of grinding and popping every time I opened my mouth. After my accident it was hard to find a good doctor who specialized in treating this disorder. I ended up getting referred to one of the top specialists in the United States who actually helped pioneer the development of specialized appliances, or splints, that help move the disc back in place. I spent thousands of dollars on therapy with this doctor and even though he is one of the best in this field, it just wasn't enough for what I needed. One side would not respond to his treatments and he ended up referring me to a top surgeon in Gainesville for open jaw surgery. The thought of this terrified me and after talking to my grandmother, who had been treated by Dr. Boylan in the past for her knee problems, I decided to give him a try in June 2008. He had been very up front with her and even though her doctor told her she needed a knee replacement, Dr. Boylan was able to help her and her knee is 100% better now with no surgery. Needless to say, Dr. Boylan worked wonders on my jaw! No open jaw surgery for me! He is very professional and sits down and has a consultation with you up front. He told me then that he was certain he could help me and relieved the worries I had. I had never seen a chiropractor before and all I pictured was him jerking my jaw around and hearing lots of popping when the adjustment was made. He assured me this was not the way it was going to happen and he was right. When he adjusts your jaw you don't hear any noises or really even feel anything. It's like you don't even know it's happening when the adjustment is being made. It is truly amazing to be healed finally after the years and money spent with other doctors. Dr. Boylan had this major problem fixed for me within months. Now I just go for occasional maintenance when I feel like I need it, which seems to be happening at longer intervals every time. I am so thankful that Dr. Boylan was able to quickly and painlessly fix this very painful and scary problem I had been dealing with for so many years. I can't imagine how hard things would have been without him! Thanks Dr. Boylan
